Today's class started at the Papal Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, one of the four papal basilicas. The mosaics in the church are one of the oldest representations of the Virgin Mary. The apse mosaics depict scenes of Christ and the Virgin Mary. The nave mosaics represent Old Testament events such as Moses parting the Red Sea. The ceiling is made of Inca gold. Afterwards we stopped at the Church of Saint Peter in Chains or San Pietro in Vincoli, a Roman Catholic Titular Church and Minor basilica. It is best known for Michelangelo's statue of Moses, part of the tomb of Pope Julius II.
